A life with potential

The debate between those who favor abortion and those who believe in the sanctity of life is one that is ongoing and widely discussed. The division in the situation is between those who believe in the rights of the mother and those who believe in the life of the baby. Both sides of the argument have valid points but I believe that we must look at what life is defined as and the purpose of that life in order to justify the act of abortion.

According to Dictionary.com, life is defined as, “The property or quality that distinguishes living organisms from dead organisms and inanimate matter, manifested in functions such as metabolism, growth, reproduction, and response to stimuli or adaptation to the environment originating from within the organism.” As in the case of a growing fetus, it is considered life due to the fact that it performs bodily functions and it is growing and adapting. When abortion is performed, a life is being taken. It is not just a potential life, it is an actual life.

The creation of a specific life may seem like an accident pertaining to the specific circumstances of conception, however, no life is an accident in its existence. A life could have the potential to accomplish great things such as curing cancer, building a great business, or producing other life. All of creation is beautiful and detailed, but a baby is especially amazing and complex in its existence. From the miracle of how a baby is formed and then given birth to, it is hard to believe that that all happened by accident.

When it comes to taking a defined and not accidental life, it starts to seem absolutely ridiculous. To destroy the complexity and beauty of such a delicate creation is cruel and selfish. It becomes a matter of taking for granted the potential that specific life has. It is also an act of taking control over a situation in which one does not have the right to control. The circumstances of the conception of a child may seem like an accident, but as soon as a life is formed, that life has potential, purpose, and is created with great.
