Christians always quote passages like Psalm 19:1-4a to prop up scientific realism and they even sometimes go so far as to use these passages to prop up current scientific paradigms. I think using these passages in this way is spurious. But today I was reading Ecclesiastes and noticed something. If a passage like Psa. 19:1-4a is read to be support for realism or even for the correctness of current scientific paradigms, then why aren’t passages like Ecc. 8:17 (“then I saw all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. However much man may toil in seeking, he will not find it out. Even though a wise man claims to know, he cannot find it out”) or Ecc. 3:11c (“he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end”) support for instrumentalism or skepticism towards the current scientific paradigms?
