Ja Rule’s Commitment with God

Posted in Forum Post

38 year-old, famous rapper Ja Rule had changed his life after being released from jail. He wanted to gain a better relationship with God when he later starred in the film, I’m in Love with a Church Girl. Jeffery Atkins “aka” Ja Rule was raised a Jehovah’s Witness. Ja Rule stated, “his mother left the faith in his pre-teen years [then] he soured on the religion” (Hare). Jeffery did not want to have anything to do with the religion after the situation that had occurred with his mother. When the movie I’m in Love with a Church Girl was released in December 2013, Ja Rule found himself growing interested into the word of God. During the process of filming the movie, Jeffery began to visit several churches while promoting his project. He had drawn close to the Hillsong Church in New York City, where him and his wife were both saved. Atkins claims, “I kind of reconnected with God by doing the… movie” (Hare). In the cinema, Ja Rule played the role of a retired high level drug trafficker. He then found the women of his dreams, Vanessa (Adrienne Bailon). Bailon’s character was featured as a women of God. This film brought Ja Rule and his family closer to taking the next step in walking faithfully with God. Ja reported, “[Being a reformed Christian], he’s now trying to figure out how to practice his faith while still accomplishing his profession” (Hare). The meaning of this experience that Ja Rule faced is that anyone can decide to accept God as their Lord and Savior, but they must put forth their full commitment towards him. It does not matter what ethnic background an individual  comes from or their personality, but how they are willing to let the Lord impact their lives.  Ja Rule was worried about how others would have perceived him after making this decision in his life. Just like God declares, “Do not judge by appearances, but judge by right judgment” (John 7:24). Although Ja Rule may have been concerned about what others said in the eyes of the Lord, they should not be quick to judge. Jeffery was directing his life in the right direction and was also doing a wonderful part by leading his family as well. He even responds, “I’m taking baby steps, and I want to get closer to God” (Hare). All Jeffery Atkins wanted was to be sure that he was doing the right thing in his life. Ja Rule put back the life of crime and made an amazing choice of becoming a follower of Christ. Even with his past history I do not think that can come in between his relationship with the Lord but instead open his eyes and realize how God has been such a blessing. God has a plan for everyone just like stated in Jeremiah 29:11 but we must want to follow his path.
